HEALTH BENEFITS OF SILK

Actress Jane Birkin’s mother may have been onto something when she told her daughter, “When you’ve got nothing left, all you can do is get into silk underwear and start reading Proust.”.
But do you know, From where did the cultivation of silk occur?
Well, the cultivation of domesticated silk started in China. As per archaeological evidence, the use of silk textiles in China back to 6500 BC, and the antiquated Chinese positively utilized silk as ahead of schedule as 3600 BC.
Silk trade routes were due to silk production in China and the Silk Road was stretched from China to Western Europe.
So now we are aware of silk origin and its parental home, let's understand why its good to have silk underwear?

HYPOALLERGENIC

“People are very rarely allergic to silk,” says Neal B. Schultz, MD, a New York City dermatologist. This is because silk is free of any potentially irritating added chemicals and contains natural substances that ward off various environmental allergens (and resulting skin conditions), including dust mites, mold, and fungus, he explains.

SLEEP TIGHT

The experts say that bedding may be at least partly to blame in some of these cases. Sheets that irritate your skin, bunch up, or invite dust mites in will interfere with a good night’s rest. Silk, with all its aforementioned benefits, is the fabric that will dress your bed for the sweetest possible slumber.

NO SKIN IRRIATION

Because silk is composed of long, smooth, natural fibers tightly woven together, it helps decrease skin's loss of moisture and is better tolerated than other fabrics by people with sensitive skin, Dr. Peterson says. Stay away from synthetic fibers, wools, and even some cottons that may contain small, stiff, woven fibers that can cause irritation.

GLOWING COMPLEXION

The tightly-woven, smooth fibers of silk help keep moisture close to the skin, says Jennifer Peterson, MD, a dermatologist at the Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center in Houston. This is a great beauty tip for those with dry, flaky skin. As a bonus, she says, hydrated, plump skin cells show fewer fine lines (wrinkles!) and more luminosity than dehydrated skin cells.

    WHY SILK?

Silk always feels great against your skin, but experts have evidence to suggest that it can also help stop ageing. The material contains a natural protein, as a well a number of all-important amino acids. Studies have concluded that amino acids can make wrinkles appear smoother as the nervous system becomes more relaxed. Silk also contains a natural chemical albumen, which speeds up the skin’s metabolism, so that skin cells can develop and repair. It doesn’t absorb moisture, either, which is ideal if you apply facial creams before bed.

    TEMPERATURE

The natural properties of silk and its double-stranded fibres are similar to human hair, which explains why the material is perfectly suited to keeping your body temperature cool. Silk provides a breathable, yet insulating barrier between yourself and the surrounding temperature, which can keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

    HEALTHY

For centuries, the Chinese realised that silk had the ability to ease aches and pains. To this day, the material is still used for that very purpose. Unlike other types of bedding and night clothing, silk lies gently onto the body. Whilst having similar cooling qualities to cotton, silk puts less pressure on problematic joints which eliminates painful pressure points, meaning you have a more comfortable night’s rest.
